  • The first person believed to have set foot on present day Brunswick County was Italian explorer Giovanni Verrazano in 1524.

  • The first “marketing campaign” for Brunswick County was published in 1666, in London, in the form of a pamphlet penned by Robert Horne.

  • Brunswick County is a popular destination for birding enthusiasts. Here bird watchers can spot warblers, painted buntings, bald eagles and several kinds of sparrows.

  • During the Revolutionary War, Brunswick Town was burned to the ground by British troops.

  • The Shallotte River was originally called the “Charlotte River.” Somehow, over time, the pronunciation was altered.

  • If you stay out late at night on the beach during the months of May through October you can witness baby sea turtles “boiling” out of the sand and walking into the ocean for their first time.

  • Edgar Allen Poe composed some of his writings while spending a summer in Brunswick County.

  • The first “stud book” in America – a publication with information on the pedigrees of horses – was made in Brunswick County by James Harrison.
