Try Simple, Yet Delicious Southern Food at The Basics

A dish from The Basics in Wilmington North Carolina

Chef and co-owner Mary Long opened The Basics with the goal of showing people how unique and delicious Southern cuisine can truly be. Surpassing the standard staples like fried chicken, Long creates delicious dishes that let you truly explore Southern flavors, sometimes with a modern or unique twist.

When you stop in for breakfast, there are over 20 savory menu items to choose from. Try their stoneground Southern grits that are topped with sauteed vidalias, tomatoes, and feta. Also, their biscuits are not to be missed. Choose from the fried chicken biscuit, bacon, egg, and cheese, biscuit, smoked ham biscuit, or sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit. Great side items to add to your meal include: potato cakes, grits, French toast, and more.

For lunch, start with a yummy appetizer like their fried oysters, fruit and cheese, fried green tomatoes, crab cakes, or warm spinach dip. Then move on to your main course by picking from 7 different sandwiches, 4 salads, and 7 main dishes. Add a side to your meal like fried okra, green beans, collard greens, or a cup of soup. If you manage to leave room for dessert, choose from their peach cobbler, Coca-cola cake, hummingbird cake, or banana pudding.

If it’s dinner time, we recommend you start off with their Southern Canape which is made with pimento cheese, crudite, spiced pecans, and devilled eggs. Popular entrees include their pan fried flounder, shrimp and grits, meatloaf, smoked pork BBQ, honey bourbon pork tenderloin, and vegetarian lasagna. Finish your meal off with a Fallen Chocolate Cake and you’re sure to leave satisfied.
